During birthdays, weddings, holidays, funerals, and anniversaries, flowers are viewed as the perfect gift for your loved ones. Every flower expresses feelings for the person you love. On specific occasions that we are celebrating flowers are an amazing gift to bring along. In return, the recipient feels that they are valued and loved and most importantly, that their event will be remembered.

The history of the area and the natural beauty we see on our doorstep is a constant source of inspiration for us and we would like to share some of the history and maybe inspire others. We are confident that when you learn of the natural beauty and history of the area you will see why our team of dedicated artisanal florists are the perfect option for flower delivery in Portsmouth.
Situated primarily on the island of Portsea, Portsmouth is a port city in Hampshire on the south east coast of England. Locally known as Pompey, Portsmouth is the only island city in the UK and has a population of over 200,000. With origins dating back to Roman Britain, Portsmouth has been a significant naval port for centuries and boasts the world’s oldest surviving dry dock still in active use. It was constructed in 1495 by Henry VII. By the early nineteenth century in the Block Mills section of Portsmouth Dockyard the world’s first mass-production line was established, making it the world’s most industrialised site and a strong claimant as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.
Granted market town status by Richard I in 1194 Portsmouth is far more than just a naval city, and has a long tradition of celebrating parks and green spaces which can still be enjoyed today. Flowers brighten up the city as local amateur and professional florists make use of the varied habitats to enhance the beauty of the already scenic town. There are a series of natural lakes both fresh and saline, dotted throughout the coastline and these have been protected by the establishment of numerous nature reserves. These provide habitat for local wildlife and migratory wildfowl and waders.
Hampshire’s oldest nature reserve, Farlington Marshes, is located on the edge of Portsmouth and was created from reclaimed land in 1771. The marshes are a Site of Special Scientific Interest and provide a winter habitat for a variety of migratory sea birds which are attracted by the diverse array of flowers and seagrasses that can be found here. These also attract numerous insects and pollinators which, in turn, attract the various species of birds who can rely on a steady food supply to sustain them during the harsh winter months. In the summer months the area is home to a large variety of birds that come here to breed as a result of the abundance of food and shelter on offer.
Portsdown Hill is another local SSI, and consists of over fifty hectares of chalk ridge that forms a rare grassland habitat. When grazing ceased here in the 1950’s the area was invaded by scrub and a restoration programme was begun in 1995 to restore the natural habitat. As a result numerous native flowers and grasses have made a stunning recovery and scrub re-encroachment is managed naturally with winter grazing. Due to the abundance and variety of flowers that have returned several butterfly species that were on the brink of extinction, such as the Adonis blue, chalkhill blue and small blue are flourishing again.
Langstone harbour has also been regenerated to encourage local species such as Hampshire’s county flower the dog rose (Rosa canina) to return. The flowers and wildlife found here are a vital part of the salt marsh and shingle islands which are surrounded by intertidal mudflats and seagrass meadows.
This brief outline of the flowers and wildlife to be found here are just a glimpse of the inspiration driving our florists. At Knot Just Blooms our florists believe we can provide the bouquet for any occasion and we pride ourselves in our attention to detail.
